If you are any of the above and you are considering investing in an Eddy Current Separator then let us help you understand and discover their capabilities and why you should choose an Eddy Current Separator (Modular or Mobile) from Ecohog.
Eddy Current Separator – The Working Principle
If you are just discovering Eddy Current Separation, let’s look at what it does, and how:
The goal of any Eddy Current Separator is separate non-ferrous metals from various applications. Depending on your line of business, that might be from ferrous metal, wood, plastics, glass, municipal waste (household waste), biomass and thanks to the ever-growing evolution of technology, separation from WEEE (Electronic Waste), has become more prevalent.
How an Eddy Current Separator does this, is down to a combination of electromagnetic induction, lenz’s law and magnetic repulsion.
Lets look specifically at the Ecohog Eddy Current Separator Technology from start to finish.
Step 1 – Ferrous Removal/Downstream Protection
Our eddy current separators begin the separation process by isolating the ferrous metals first in a preliminary cleaning process – this measure protects the ECS and further downstream machinery from damage from metals such as Iron and Steel.
The application falls onto the 2500mm x 1900mm vibrating pan feeder that is powered by 2, 2.2kW vibrating motors which creates an even single-layer flow to the application as it passes over the magnetic drum.
We utilise our powerful 2.2kW IP55 geared motor drum magnet (dimensions 400mm x 2000mm) to draw out any ferrous metals from the application.
The ferrous metals isolated, are then expelled on the first of 3 conveyors (powered by a 5.5kW IP55 geared motor with dimensions of 4000mm x 700mm).
Step 2 – Non-Ferrous Separation
The remaining application moves along the next ECS belt, which house a 1.5kW belt motor, again being distributed evenly ahead of meeting the powerful 7.5Kw ECS rotor motor.
As the material passes over, the magnetic field cuts across any conducive metal it meets, inducing a circulating electric (eddy) current within those metals.
In straightforward terms, this means that non-ferrous metals like aluminum and copper feels a repelling force and are launched forward to become separated from the application. Check out the slow motion video as demonstration.
Step 3 – Non-Ferrous Removal
Once separated, the non-ferrous metal leaves the eddy current separator in a dedicated conveyor, whist the remaining application also leaves via a separator conveyor.

Feed Material and Sizing
• Particle size: Between 5mm – 120mm
• Throughput Volume – Up to 40TPH
• Burden Depth – Our Vibrating Pan Feeder distributes material into a single layer to ensure smaller particles are not missed.
Rotor & Magnet Design
• Rotor Type: Eccentric – protecting from heat damage and from wear and tear created by hot/burning metals
• Pole Configuration – High Gauss, 22 pole designed to maximise the induction of eddy currents, targeting particles as small as 1-2mm as well as Zorba
• Shell Durability – With sealed shell bearings, durability is built in, right down to the small of details on the machine
Operation & Maintenance
• Upstream Ferrous Removal – Our vibrating pan feeder and powerful 2.2kw IP55 geared motor ensures to catch any problematic ferrous metals to protect any remaining machinery downstream.
• Adjustable Speeds – Conveyors and feeder speeds can be optimised to suit the application
• Motor disconnect switch for maintenance task
• Pre-start siren and dual channel emergency stop
Our Ecohog HogMag Eddy Current Separators use a strong magnetic sorting technology to separate non-ferrous metals from recycling waste. Waste processors and metal recyclers of various types can use the HogMag ECS range to recover valuable non-ferrous metals such as; aluminium, copper and brass from different waste types.
The recovered metals can then be sold to Scrap Recyclers or directly to Foundries to generate revenue for the Waste processors.
Ecohog HogMag ECS Range
The HogMag ECS is available in Tracked Eddy Current Separator and Modular Eddy Curretn Separator versions. The HogMag ECS range comes with standard base line features but additional bespoke options are also available.
Following the success of our original Hook Loader HogMag ECS (HM ECS – 1500) we identified the opportunity in the market for mobile tracked and semi-mobile turnkey Eddy Current Separators. The demand in the market arose for more transportable equipment as it offers a more flexible approach to waste recycling with reduced capital costs and increased residual machine values.
What are the main benefits of a HogMag ECS?
The main benefit of the HogMag ECS is its superior mobile sorting ability which automates metal recovery and negates the need for manual sorting.
Our HogMag ECS is the master of separating non-ferrous metals for maximum quality and yield. This makes the end product more profitable for the client for both reselling and reusing. With high efficiency of metal separation and low maintenance, it could be exactly what you need for your waste problems.
We can guide you with advice on your particular application and we can work on solving the solution together.
What are the key features of an Eddy Current Separator?
Where do we begin, there are quite a few key features and each of the ECS range have specific features but to list a few;
- Crawler track, Hook Loader or Semi-mobile chassis
- Vibratory feeder
- Magnetic drum separator
- High gauss ECS
- Folding stockpiling conveyors
- Hydraulic power pack
There are also many auxiliaries available which can be added to your ECS such as; 100kVA diesel generators, onboard Airhog suction system etc.
